Anthropic Unveils Claude Duet: AI Agent Built for Professionals, Not Errands

Anthropic has entered the growing AI agent market with its latest product, Claude Duet, positioning it as a tool primarily for professionals and small businesses rather than everyday personal assistants. Launched October 22, 2026, this agent emphasizes automating and managing work tasks, not errands or slick consumer-facing features. It’s designed to handle background duties—like generating briefings, creating dashboards, or recommending follow-up actions—while allowing users to stay hands-on where necessary.

What Claude Duet Can—and Can’t—Do

Duet is built on Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5 model and connects to more than 6,000 connectors and plugins via the Claude Marketplace. It can even make online purchases through Stripe Link or Shopify’s Shop Pay, although any payment activity still requires explicit user consent. On the flip side, it doesn’t handle sensitive moves like securities trading or transferring money between accounts. And while some agents offer visible real-time browser usage, Duet does not.

An important protection: Anthropic has introduced a message classifier that screens communications so sensitive data—such as credit card numbers or government IDs—doesn’t slip through. Some default behaviors include automatically declining requests for such personal info. These safeguards are part of what the company describes as a “research preview” deployment.

Market Strategy & Availability

The landscape for AI assistants is shifting toward agents that can act autonomously. Duet joins a crowded field that includes Meta’s Muse, OpenAI’s Dots, Hark, Instinct, Grok Bot, and Fo. But it distinguishes itself by focusing on work-related use cases rather than everyday errands like ticket booking or scheduling personal tasks.

Duet is already available on iOS, Android, and via the web through Claude.ai for users with Anthropic’s Pro and Max plans—though by applying through a waitlist. It carries out tasks in the background, but comes to users for confirmation when needed. As of its launch, Duet is in research preview rather than fully public release.

Anthropic sees this release as a way to compete with rivals also targeting the business segment. Meta has released versions of its Muse tool aimed at small businesses and connected apps. Similarly, OpenAI has built business integrations into Dots.

What this move means: Duet signals that the AI industry’s attention is steadily shifting from simple conversational assistants toward autonomous agents capable of supporting work workflows. Anthropic is betting that professionals and small business users will value intelligent automation and integration above flashy features.
