Amazon has announced a significant expansion of its Prime Air drone delivery service, aiming to reach nearly 500 U.S. cities by the end of 2026. This ambitious plan will increase the service’s current coverage approximately sixfold, marking a substantial milestone in Amazon’s logistics operations.
The expansion includes the introduction of Prime Air in 11 new locations: Tolleson, Arizona; Ruskin, Florida; Kansas City, Kansas; Papillion, Nebraska; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Hazel Park and Pontiac, Michigan; and Richmond, San Antonio, Richardson, and Waco, Texas. Notably, the return to Tolleson is significant, considering a previous drone incident there in October 2025, where two drones collided with a crane boom.
Amazon has emphasized its commitment to safety in light of past incidents, such as drones clipping internet cables and crashing into residential areas. The company highlights Prime Air’s advanced Detect-and-Avoid system, which continuously monitors the airspace and surroundings of each drone. Equipped with onboard cameras and sensors, these drones are designed to navigate obstacles and operate in various weather conditions, including light rain and a range of temperatures. Prime Air operates under the Federal Aviation Administration’s Part 135 certification, aligning with the regulatory standards for commercial air carriers.
David Carbon, Vice President of Amazon Prime Air, stated that customers already rely on Amazon for fast Same- and Next-Day Delivery, and Prime Air offers an even quicker option with deliveries in as fast as 30 minutes. He noted that the service has already delivered hundreds of thousands of packages by drone this year.
Currently, Prime Air operates across seven states: Arizona, Florida, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, and Texas. Plans are underway to launch in additional states, including Georgia, Ohio, Illinois, Idaho, and New York. Prime members can enjoy free ultrafast drone delivery on eligible orders of $50 or more. For orders under $50, Prime members pay a $2.99 delivery fee, while non-Prime customers are charged $4.99. The service can deliver nearly all items weighing 5 pounds or less.
This expansion comes as other major companies, such as Walmart and Alphabet’s Wing, are also developing their own drone delivery networks. In June, these companies added seven new markets, including Phoenix, Philadelphia, and the Bay Area, intensifying competition in the drone delivery sector.
Amazon’s aggressive expansion of Prime Air signifies a strategic move to dominate the emerging drone delivery market. By rapidly increasing its service areas and emphasizing safety and efficiency, Amazon aims to set a high standard in the industry. However, the success of this expansion will depend on overcoming regulatory challenges, ensuring public safety, and achieving economic viability.
