Amazon Plans 5,105-Satellite Network to Enhance iPhone Connectivity

Amazon has announced plans to deploy a constellation of up to 5,105 low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, aiming to enhance satellite-based services for devices like the iPhone. This initiative is set to bolster existing features and introduce new capabilities for users in areas lacking traditional cellular coverage.

Currently, Apple’s satellite functionalities, such as Emergency SOS, Messages via satellite, Find My, and Roadside Assistance via satellite, are facilitated through a partnership with Globalstar. In a strategic move, Amazon is in the process of acquiring Globalstar, ensuring continuity and expansion of these services. The collaboration between Apple and Amazon will see Globalstar operating alongside Amazon’s LEO satellite network, collectively powering future satellite services for Apple devices.

Amazon’s proposed satellite network is designed to provide voice, data, messaging, and emergency services to compatible devices equipped with satellite-capable chipsets. The system aims to deliver improved speed and throughput, ensuring reliable connectivity in remote or underserved regions. Amazon has highlighted its partnership with Apple, emphasizing the commitment to support and enhance satellite services for iPhone and Apple Watch models.

The deployment strategy includes five orbital shells targeting different parts of the globe. Three shells will focus on densely populated areas, while the remaining two will extend coverage toward polar regions, ensuring comprehensive global reach. Amazon has filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for this ambitious project and is currently awaiting approval. The company anticipates commencing satellite deployments in 2028, with the Globalstar acquisition expected to conclude in 2027, pending regulatory consent.
