Ambi, a startup founded by former Plaud executive Peter Mo, has secured $26 million in new funding to develop an AI-powered assistant that continuously listens and offers real-time insights. The company’s goal is to capture conversational and environmental context throughout the day, not just during meetings, and use that information to deliver proactive suggestions. This financing round was led by Luminous Ventures, known for backing AI and hardware companies, along with ODM Huaqin. Ambi’s vision includes apps across Apple platforms and a forthcoming hardware device.
What Ambi Offers
Ambi is launching apps for iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch that act similarly to advanced meeting note-takers—but with an always-on twist. Users have the option to enable ambient listening so the app can gather context both during conversations and everyday activities, not just scheduled events. During meetings, its AI agent draws from a user’s calendar, knowledge base, and web data to suggest relevant info in real time. Users can also begin tasks on one device and seamlessly continue on another.
Looking ahead, Ambi plans to roll out a desktop version that tracks ongoing work and stores key snippets in memory to provide personalized suggestions. The company is also preparing its own hardware. This device will feature a display, camera, microphone, and speaker—intended to capture context in the wearer’s environment and deliver relevant information visually or audibly.
Privacy, Disclosure & Team Growth
Ambient listening raises serious privacy and legal issues, particularly around third-party consent and transparency. Ambi has built in safety features: ambient capture is off by default, recordings are not stored, and data is encrypted. But the company has acknowledged it has not specified its encryption standards publicly. Crucially, the responsibility to inform others about ambient listening falls to users. The startup says this is a broader industry challenge, as current regulation and norms around disclosure are underdeveloped.
Ambi currently employs over 50 staff across four locations—San Francisco, Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen—and is actively hiring for go-to-market roles and AI research, particularly for speech recognition.
With this $26 million in backing, Ambi is staking its claim in the evolving world of always-on AI agents—where context isn’t just captured during meetings but as a continuous stream. The stakes are technical, ethical, and commercial. As the market looks for more seamless interfaces between us and the AI we’re trusting, Ambi’s approach will test where we draw the lines on privacy, control, and usefulness. Watch for how the company handles disclosure, device design, and regulatory scrutiny in the months ahead.
