Google Calendar Introduces Material 3 Expressive Widget Redesign

Google Calendar for Android is rolling out a significant update to its homescreen widgets, embracing the Material 3 Expressive (M3E) design language. This enhancement aims to provide users with a more cohesive and visually appealing experience, aligning with Google’s broader initiative to modernize its app interfaces.

Key Changes in the Calendar Schedule Widget:

– Event Addition Button: The traditional floating action button (FAB) has been transformed into a pill-shaped button for adding events. This design not only modernizes the interface but also reduces the widget’s height, allowing users to view more event details at a glance.

– Typography Enhancements: The font used for displaying the month has been made bolder, improving readability and giving the widget a more contemporary appearance.

– Layout Adjustments for Narrower Configurations: In narrower widget configurations, Google has streamlined the design by eliminating the two-column layout. Previously, the day and date were displayed in a pill on the left side. Now, they appear at the top, resulting in a cleaner list design with reduced abbreviations. This change enhances information density, making it easier for users to scan their schedules.

Updates to the Calendar Month View Widget:

– Event Addition Button: Similar to the schedule widget, the month view widget now features the new pill-shaped ‘plus’ button located at the top-right corner, ensuring consistency across widgets.

These updates are part of Google’s ongoing efforts to implement the Material 3 Expressive design across its suite of applications. The M3E design emphasizes dynamic color usage, rounded containers, and a more personalized user interface, aiming to create a more engaging and user-friendly experience.

The rollout of these redesigned widgets is associated with Google Calendar version 2025.32.0.x. However, the server-side update is being deployed gradually and may not be immediately available to all users. Users are encouraged to keep their applications updated to ensure they receive the latest features and improvements as they become available.

This redesign reflects Google’s commitment to enhancing user experience through thoughtful design updates, ensuring that tools like Google Calendar remain intuitive and efficient for daily use.
