Apple has revealed what may be the most significant update yet for the iPad mini line, introducing an 8.5-inch OLED display, a powerful A20 Pro chip, water and dust resistance, and a host of other enhancements that refine its portability and performance.
Display, Design and Hardware Upgrades
The new iPad mini moves into OLED territory with a larger 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR screen. Apple promises more than double the peak brightness of the previous model, along with a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, support for full-screen HDR and SDR content up to 600 nits, and nano-texture display option to reduce glare when working outdoors. The OLED panel is paired with 24 percent thinner bezels, enabling the increased screen size without altering the overall footprint.
Externally, it’s even thinner at just 5.4 mm, and lighter. The device now carries an IP67 rating, offering protection against dust and immersion in up to one meter of water for 30 minutes. The design also includes finishes in “midnight” and “starlight.”
Performance, Cameras and Connectivity Boosts
At the heart is the A20 Pro chip, built on a 2-nanometer process. Apple says the chip offers big leaps in neural performance thanks to neural accelerators in each GPU core and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. Daily use—whether gaming, creative work, or running AI models—is said to be up to 4.5× faster in AI workload performance, 2.7× faster for graphics, and 60 percent faster in multithreaded CPU tasks than the previous generation.
The front camera has been repositioned to the landscape edge with 12 MP, complete with Center Stage support, while the rear camera is also 12 MP wide, capable of recording 4K video at 60 fps and including an Adaptive True Tone flash. An “Acoustic Display” introduces woofers and tweeters paired with the display glass, all in a sealed enclosure, to improve audio performance in line with the new water-resistant build.
On connectivity, the iPad mini brings in Apple’s new N1 chip for wireless networking (Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread), and cellular models feature the C2 modem for faster and more efficient data speeds. On-device capabilities are enhanced through the inclusion of iPadOS 27, which includes upgraded Apple Intelligence and a more capable Siri AI.
Pricing, Storage, and Availability
Pre-orders begin October 28, with the device hitting Apple Stores and arriving to customers on November 6. It will be offered in 36 countries. U.S. pricing starts at $699 for the Wi-Fi model, while the Wi-Fi + Cellular version is priced higher. The iPad mini will be available in 128 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB storage options.
Accessories such as a two-panel Smart Folio in navy blue and taupe will be available, and both Apple Pencil (USB-C) and Apple Pencil Pro are supported.
Apple also highlights environmental upgrades: 35 percent recycled content overall (including aluminum and battery materials), 40 percent renewable energy use in the supply chain, and paper packaging that’s fully fiber-based.
This latest iPad mini also introduces a sealed Acoustic Display to achieve its IP67 rating. Apple clarifies that water and dust resistance comes under controlled conditions and may degrade over time.
Why This Matters
The shift to OLED, inclusion of IP67 rating, and the incorporation of Wi-Fi 7 and newer cellular technologies elevate the mini beyond just a compact tablet—it becomes a strong option for creatives, professionals, and mobile users who need serious capability in a smaller form. The A20 Pro’s performance leap, particularly for AI and graphics workloads, marks a substantial gap between this generation and its predecessor.
For those who value portability, designing something thinner and lighter while increasing display quality without making the device larger is impressive. Still, the pricing edge—$699 for the Wi-Fi base—pushes the iPad mini more into premium territory, making its value relative to iPad Air and Pro options something to watch.
