The Swipe Shift: From Notifications to AI
From iOS 5 in 2011 until today, swiping down from the top center summoned Notification Center—a hub for alerts collected chronologically. With iOS 27, if Siri AI is enabled, that familiar center-swipe is repurposed: it now launches Siri AI. To still access Notification Center, users must swipe down from the top-left corner instead. The new scheme grants Siri AI most of the top edge’s real estate for activation.
Apple has also refined the layout further in iPadOS 27 beta 2. The drop-down regions are more balanced: Notifications open from a left-corner region, Control Center from the right, and the center swath is dedicated to Siri AI. On smaller devices or depending on settings like whether the date or AM/PM is shown, the area for Notification Center can shrink noticeably.
Legacy Gestures Meet New Priorities
This gesture overhaul mirrors Apple’s earlier alteration when Control Center, previously accessed via a bottom-swipe, shifted to a top-right corner gesture with the iPhone X. That was another moment where users had to relearn something nearly universal. This time, the change plays into Apple’s current priority: pushing Siri AI into everyday interactions by making its activation more prominent.
Feedback on the change is mixed. While the new Siri AI functionality is getting strong early praise, adapting to the gesture reshuffle hasn’t been seamless. Since there’s no toggle to restore the center-top swipe for Notification Center when Siri AI is turned on, many users may need time—or frustration—to retrain decades of reflexes.
iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 go live on September 14, likely around 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET. Users downloading the update will find their top-edge gestures altered depending on whether they opt into Siri AI support.
