Apple has officially introduced the M6 chip, its first creation using a 2-nanometer process node, bringing boosted performance, bigger efficiency gains, and upgraded AI and graphics capabilities. Debuting in the upcoming Mac mini, which arrives September 22, the M6 is a major generational leap forward. It houses a more powerful configuration across its CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, and memory systems, targeting both prosumers and users eager for on-device AI.
What’s New With the M6
The CPU in the M6 sports a 12-core setup—up from ten cores in the M5—consisting of two super cores, four performance cores, and six efficiency cores. Apple claims this delivers the highest single-threaded speeds in its family and a multithreaded performance boost of about 1.2× over the M5 and roughly 2.4× over the original M1.
Graphics get a refresh as well. The GPU, now with 12 cores versus ten in its predecessor, includes a Neural Accelerator embedded in each core. Apple estimates peak GPU compute for AI is nearly 30% better than in the M5 and more than eight times faster compared to the M1. Enhancements like hardware-accelerated ray tracing, updated shader cores, Dynamic Caching, and a roughly 50% jump in geometry rates underpin sharper graphics, especially in demanding tasks.
AI & Memory Upgrades
A standout feature is the dual 16-core Neural Engine, which offers up to twice the peak AI compute over earlier chips. Unlike systems that throttle or alternate between engines, Apple says system frameworks can tap both engines simultaneously, allowing faster execution of on-device large language models and other AI workloads.
On the memory front, the M6 supports up to 32GB of unified memory, with a bandwidth of up to 170GB/s—about 10% better than the M5 and 2.5× greater than the M1. These gains help the chip handle larger datasets, faster multitasking, and more intense GPU workloads.
