Apple has just introduced its latest Mac Studio models featuring the all-new M5 Max and the crown-jewel M5 Ultra chips—its most powerful processor to date. The overhaul includes major upgrades in storage architecture, connectivity, memory capacity and AI-focused performance, setting a new benchmark for desktop Macs.
Next-Gen Architecture and Connectivity
The refreshed Mac Studio replaces its predecessor’s storage setup with a cutting-edge PCIe Gen 6 SSD configuration that Apple claims is up to twice as fast. Complementing storage gains are Thunderbolt 5 ports, providing bandwidths up to 120 Gb/s for external devices. Wireless connections also see a boost: the new model supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 via Apple’s latest N1 chip. Users get built-in genlock over USB-C, and the machine can output to as many as eight displays.
M5 Ultra: Performance Beast
The M5 Ultra pushes Apple’s performance envelope. It combines two dual-die M5 Max chips using UltraFusion tech, which dramatically ramps up inter-die bandwidth to over 4.4 TB/s and boosts connection density more than sixfold. The CPU packs up to 36 cores (12 super cores, 24 performance cores), delivering around 25% faster single-threaded and 30% faster multithreaded performance compared to the M3 Ultra.
On the GPU front, the M5 Ultra supports up to 80 GPU cores, and each core integrates a Neural Accelerator. This design improves AI compute capabilities by up to 4.5× over the M3 Ultra, and more than 6× over the earlier M1 Ultra. Graphics performance has also been enhanced—face-shading, mesh shading, and ray tracing are all improved, resulting in up to 40% faster performance versus M3 Ultra.
The media engine has been upgraded too: there are specialized hardware units to encode and decode H.264, HEVC, plus four simultaneous ProRes encode/decode engines and hardware-accelerated AV1 decoding. A 32-core Neural Engine handles AI workloads locally, while unified memory now scales up to 512 GB with a peak bandwidth of 1.2 TB/s—roughly a 50% improvement over the previous generation. These enhancements make the Mac Studio more capable of performing large AI model inference, managing huge datasets and boosting token-throughput on device.
M5 Max: More Power, More Flexibility
Alongside the Ultra, the Mac Studio is available with an upgraded M5 Max option. It features an 18-core CPU (6 super cores and 12 performance cores), up to 40 GPU cores, and supports as much as 128 GB unified memory—at up to 614 GB/s throughput. Storage caps out at 8 TB. In AI performance, it offers nearly four times what the previous generation could achieve.
Clustering & Performance Scaling
For demanding workflows, Apple has built in cluster support: using Thunderbolt 5 and RDMA (remote direct memory access), multiple Mac Studios can be linked to form shared memory pools. A configuration of four units delivers up to three times the AI inference speed of a single system. These capabilities are aimed at users running large AI-driven workloads, such as training or inference on large language models.
Release Date & Availability
The new Mac Studio models are available for preorder now. The general launch date is set for September 22, while configurations with the full 512 GB memory will roll out in late October.
What this upgrade means is that Apple is leaning hard into its AI future.
