Apple’s initiative to integrate driver’s licenses and state IDs into Apple Wallet is gaining momentum, with several states poised to adopt the feature. This development marks a significant step toward a more digital and convenient form of identification for iPhone and Apple Watch users.
Currently, residents in 14 states and Puerto Rico can add their driver’s licenses or state IDs to Apple Wallet. The states include Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, West Virginia, and Arkansas. This functionality allows users to present their digital IDs at select TSA checkpoints and participating businesses, enhancing both convenience and security.
Looking ahead, seven additional states have confirmed plans to support digital IDs in Apple Wallet:
- Kentucky: Scheduled to launch in the summer of 2026.
- North Carolina: Expected to roll out in early 2027.
- Oklahoma: Development is underway, with the launch date to be determined.
- Utah: Currently in development, with no specified launch date.
- Virginia: In the works, with the timeline yet to be announced.
- Connecticut: Previously identified as a partner by Apple; current status is unclear.
- Mississippi: Also previously mentioned by Apple; current status remains uncertain.
Beyond these states, the Secure Technology Alliance reports that several others are exploring mobile ID support through legislation or studies. These states include Indiana, Vermont, New Jersey, Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri, Nevada, and Wyoming. However, the progress and commitment levels vary, and not all may ultimately implement support for digital IDs in Apple Wallet.
For individuals in states without current or imminent support, Apple introduced a Digital ID feature powered by U.S. passports. This allows users to create a digital ID in Apple Wallet, enabling them to use their iPhone at TSA checkpoints across more than 250 airports in the United States, regardless of state-specific support.
The expansion of digital IDs in Apple Wallet signifies a broader trend toward digital transformation in personal identification. As more states adopt this technology, users can anticipate increased convenience and security in verifying their identities. However, the pace of adoption varies, and users should stay informed about developments in their respective states.
