OpenAI Introduces ChatGPT for Teens with Enhanced Learning Tools

OpenAI has unveiled a new ChatGPT mode tailored specifically for teenagers, aiming to foster learning and critical thinking while ensuring a safe and controlled environment. This initiative introduces several features designed to support educational growth and responsible AI usage among younger users.

The ChatGPT for Teens mode includes learning-focused starter prompts to assist with studying, skill development, and idea exploration. Integrated tools such as quizzes and a dedicated Study mode are incorporated to enhance the educational experience. Additionally, the Study hours feature allows teens or their guardians to schedule specific times when new chats automatically initiate in study mode, promoting structured learning sessions.

To encourage healthy usage habits, the platform provides reminders for users to take breaks. It also emphasizes that ChatGPT is an AI entity without consciousness or emotions, aiming to prevent users from forming personal attachments to the chatbot.

Accounts identified as belonging to individuals under 18 will have the ChatGPT for Teens mode enabled by default. Users who believe this feature has been applied in error can verify their age and request the removal of these specific protections.

The rollout of ChatGPT for Teens began on August 18, 2026, for eligible accounts on both free and paid personal ChatGPT plans. Full availability in Australia is expected by September 8.

This development underscores OpenAI’s commitment to providing age-appropriate AI interactions, balancing technological engagement with educational value and user safety. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into daily life, such tailored approaches are crucial in addressing the unique needs and challenges faced by younger users.
