Google has rolled out a significant update to its Pixel Journal app, coinciding with the launch of the Pixel 11. This update introduces several new features and user interface improvements aimed at enhancing the journaling experience.
One of the notable additions is the enhancement of the Inspiration feature on the compose screen. Users will now find a refreshed interface that includes a new icon, along with ‘Refresh’ and ‘Close’ buttons, providing more control over their writing prompts.
The update also introduces a ‘Customization’ tab, allowing users to choose between ‘Compact’ or ‘Full’ media layouts for their entries. This flexibility enables a more personalized journaling experience tailored to individual preferences.
A significant advancement in this update is the introduction of an ‘Auto Format’ feature, accessible via a new icon at the top of the compose screen. This feature offers two modes: ‘Simple’ and ‘Expressive,’ and leverages Google’s Private AI Compute in the cloud. This shift from exclusively on-device processing to cloud-based AI aims to provide more powerful features while maintaining user privacy. Google emphasizes that Pixel Journal operates within a secure, isolated environment both on the device and in the cloud, ensuring that user data remains private. Users also have the option to disable AI features within the app’s settings.
To encourage consistent journaling habits, the app now offers customizable reminders at set times: morning (around 7 AM), afternoon (around 2 PM), and evening (around 9 PM). These prompts aim to help users integrate journaling into their daily routines.
Visual enhancements have also been made to improve user experience. The dark theme in the ‘Entries’ tab has been adjusted to enhance the visibility of the bookmarks icon, and the ‘Insights’ tab has received visual tweaks to the calendar for better readability.
Users can expect to see version 2026.07.27.x of the Journal app rolling out to their devices, including older models like the Pixel 10a. While the update is not yet widely available, it is anticipated to reach all users in the coming weeks.
