WhatsApp Introduces Username Support for New Contacts

WhatsApp is enhancing its user experience by introducing a username field when adding new contacts. This update allows users to associate a unique username with each contact, in addition to their name and phone number.

Previously, WhatsApp relied solely on phone numbers for user identification. The introduction of usernames marks a significant shift, providing users with an alternative means of connecting and enhancing privacy. This feature is currently being rolled out to select users on both beta and stable versions of the app.

To add a username to a new contact, users can tap the “+” button in the Chats tab, select “New contact,” and enter the desired username in the designated field alongside the contact’s name and phone number. This streamlined process aims to simplify contact management and improve user interaction.

Incorporating usernames aligns WhatsApp with other messaging platforms that have long offered this feature. It also addresses user concerns about privacy and ease of use, allowing for more personalized and secure communication.

As WhatsApp continues to roll out this feature, users can expect a more flexible and user-friendly approach to managing their contacts. This development reflects the platform’s commitment to evolving in response to user needs and industry standards.
