Hardware Enhancements
The Pixel Watch 5 retains the domed Actua 360 display, protected by custom 3D Corning Gorilla Glass 5. This AMOLED LTPO screen offers a resolution of 320 PPI and achieves up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness. The device’s thickness remains at 12.3mm for both the 41mm and 45mm case sizes. Battery capacities have seen a slight increase of 7-10 mAh; however, Google’s battery life estimates remain consistent, with the smaller model offering 30 hours and the larger model 40 hours of usage.
Under the hood, the Pixel Watch 5 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated chip, delivering a 12% boost in CPU performance. Accompanied by an increase in RAM from 2 GB to 3 GB and a dual-chip architecture featuring an M55 co-processor, the device promises a 20% improvement in overall speed. Storage capacity has also been doubled to 64 GB, facilitating new on-device AI functionalities. Additionally, the watch introduces a second-generation Active Band made from Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (HNBR) with a soft-touch coating, replacing the previous fluoroelastomer material.
Software Innovations
Central to the Pixel Watch 5’s software advancements is the integration of Gemini Intelligence. This feature introduces Proactive Suggestions within the Google Messages app, offering context-aware, one-tap actions. For instance, if a contact requests a phone number or location, the watch can generate immediate reply options. These insights are processed on the user’s phone and seamlessly bridged to the watch.
Furthermore, the device enhances on-device smart replies by presenting three potential responses instead of one, with a 50% reduction in response time. Users can also monitor task automation directly from their watch face, receiving prompts when actions require confirmation.
The Gemini app on Wear OS has been updated to incorporate Neural Expressive and Personal Intelligence features. This integration allows the watch to access data from apps like Gmail, Calendar, and Keep, enabling it to answer user queries based on email content or shopping lists. Additionally, the raise-to-talk gesture has been expanded beyond the watch face, offering more flexibility in voice interactions.
Offline functionality has also been enhanced. The Pixel Watch 5 leverages an on-device model to execute commands without internet connectivity, such as setting timers, adjusting settings like brightness and Do Not Disturb mode, controlling music playback, opening apps, and initiating workouts.
Beyond AI capabilities, the watch introduces a new “At a Glance” feature at the bottom of the display, providing users with timely and relevant information without the need to navigate through multiple screens.
