Apple TV+ has decided not to proceed with its planned adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s seminal 1987 novel, ‘The Bonfire of the Vanities.’ The series, which was to be helmed by acclaimed writer and producer David E. Kelley, known for his work on ‘Ally McBeal’ and ‘The Practice,’ has been shelved due to creative differences between the involved parties.
‘The Bonfire of the Vanities’ is a satirical exploration of ambition, social class, and greed set against the backdrop of 1980s New York City. The narrative centers on Sherman McCoy, a wealthy bond trader whose life unravels following a tragic incident in the Bronx. The novel delves into themes of racial tension, media influence, and the moral complexities of urban life.
Previously, the novel was adapted into a 1990 film directed by Brian De Palma, featuring Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, and Melanie Griffith. Despite the star-studded cast, the film was both a critical and commercial failure, grossing only $15.6 million against a $47 million budget. Critics panned the adaptation for its lack of depth and failure to capture the novel’s satirical essence.
The recent television adaptation was first reported to be in development in April 2026. However, with Apple TV+ withdrawing from the project, the production team, in collaboration with Warner Bros. Television, is now seeking alternative platforms to bring the series to fruition.
