In a significant leadership shift at Google DeepMind, Demis Hassabis has stepped down from his role as CEO to assume the position of Chair and Chief Scientist at Alphabet. Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously the Chief Technology Officer at DeepMind, will succeed Hassabis as Senior Vice President, reporting directly to Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai. Kavukcuoglu’s tenure at DeepMind spans 13 years, during which he initiated the deep learning team and contributed to breakthroughs like WaveNet and DQN. In his new role, he will oversee the development of the Gemini model, frontier AI research, and the Gemini app and developer teams.
Pichai highlighted Kavukcuoglu’s extensive experience and leadership within DeepMind, expressing confidence in his ability to guide the organization through its next chapter.
