Deirdre O’Brien, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Retail and People, has been recognized for the seventh consecutive year on Fortune’s 2025 list of the Most Powerful Women in Business, securing the 67th position. This consistent acknowledgment underscores her significant role in steering one of the world’s most valuable companies.
A Multifaceted Leadership Role
In her capacity, O’Brien oversees Apple’s expansive global retail network, which includes over 500 stores across five continents. Beyond retail, she leads the company’s human resources operations, encompassing hiring, employee development, workplace culture, compensation, and diversity initiatives. Her dual responsibilities highlight the trust Apple places in her leadership to manage both customer-facing and internal organizational facets.
Embracing Challenges for Growth
Reflecting on her career, O’Brien emphasizes the value of confronting challenges as opportunities for learning and development. She has stated, I learned more in those horribly challenging times than any other time. When I was in those positions that I did not feel ready for, it forced me to learn a lot along the way. This perspective has been instrumental in her approach to leadership and problem-solving.
Strategic Expansion and Human Resources Leadership
In late 2024, O’Brien resumed full leadership of Apple’s People division following the departure of Chief People Officer Carol Surface. This role encompasses overseeing internal HR programs, including Apple University and initiatives aimed at fostering a positive workforce culture. Simultaneously, she continues to drive Apple’s global retail expansion, with new store openings in countries such as the United States, China, Spain, Sweden, and Malaysia in 2024, and plans for further openings in India, Japan, the UAE, and the US in 2025. Her strategic vision ensures Apple’s growth in both established and emerging markets.
A Legacy of Dedication and Innovation
Joining Apple in 1988, O’Brien has contributed to every major product launch since the iMac and played a pivotal role in the establishment of Apple’s first retail and online stores in 2001. Her extensive experience and people-centric approach continue to guide Apple’s evolution. As the company adapts to new challenges and opportunities, Deirdre O’Brien remains a cornerstone of its leadership team.
