Apple’s Smart Glasses to Evolve into Health Companion

Apple is actively developing non-augmented reality (AR) smart glasses, aiming to transform them into a significant health and fitness platform. However, these health-centric features are not expected to be available in the initial release slated for next year.

Previously, Apple explored integrating health functionalities into its Vision Pro headset. The plan included a version of the Fitness+ app designed for the headset, enabling users to follow workout sessions, monitor movements, and achieve fitness goals within the spatial computing environment. This initiative intended to leverage body-tracking technology to provide detailed movement analysis. However, challenges such as the headset’s weight led to the project’s discontinuation.

Shifting focus, Apple is now channeling efforts into embedding health and fitness capabilities into its forthcoming smart glasses. The company’s Vision Products Group is actively recruiting professionals to spearhead this endeavor. The role involves defining the future of health, well-being, and fitness experiences across vision products, translating opportunities at the intersection of spatial computing, wearables, consumer health, and human behavior into clear product directions.

Potential features for the smart glasses could include functionalities similar to the Workout Buddy feature introduced on the Apple Watch, possibly combined with heart-rate monitoring sensors akin to those in the latest AirPods Pro. Such integrations would position the glasses as valuable tools for activities like running. Additionally, the built-in cameras might facilitate real-time feedback on exercise form, assisting users in refining their workouts.

While the initial version of Apple’s smart glasses may not encompass these health features, the company’s strategic direction indicates a commitment to evolving the device into a comprehensive health companion in subsequent iterations.

Apple’s initiative to integrate health functionalities into its smart glasses underscores the growing trend of merging wearable technology with health and fitness applications. As the company refines its approach, the success of these features will likely depend on user adoption and the seamless integration of health monitoring capabilities into daily routines.
