HBO Max Introduces ‘Shorts’ Vertical Video Feed

HBO Max is enhancing its platform by introducing ‘Shorts,’ a vertical video feed designed to streamline content discovery for users. This feature presents a curated selection of trailers, clips, and bonus content tailored to individual viewing preferences, aiming to simplify the process of finding new shows and movies.

Users can access ‘Shorts’ through a new icon in the app’s bottom navigation menu. The feed leverages an AI tool that analyzes extensive scene-level metadata from HBO Max’s vast library, identifying compelling scenes for inclusion. Editors then select the most representative clips to feature, ensuring a personalized and engaging browsing experience.

In addition to ‘Shorts,’ HBO Max is testing an AI-powered conversational search function. This feature allows users to input natural language queries, such as “in the mood for a comedy” or “best movie for a girls’ night in,” to receive tailored recommendations. This approach aims to make content discovery more intuitive and user-friendly.

Currently, ‘Shorts’ is being tested with select iOS users in the United States, with plans for broader availability across more devices and markets in the near future. Similarly, the conversational search feature is in testing with select Android users in the U.S., with expansion plans forthcoming.

HBO Max’s adoption of vertical video and AI-driven search functionalities reflects a broader industry trend toward enhancing user engagement through personalized, short-form content. As streaming platforms continue to evolve, integrating such features may become essential in meeting the dynamic preferences of modern audiences.
