YouTube Music is currently experimenting with a redesigned Now Playing interface that prominently features fullscreen album art. This update aims to provide a more immersive visual experience for users during music playback.
In the existing design, album artwork is displayed as a smaller square with rounded corners, positioned between the audio/video switcher and the song title. The new design expands the album art to cover the entire screen, including the status and navigation bars. This shift from a square to a rectangular display may result in some cropping of the original artwork.
Interestingly, this fullscreen effect also applies when watching music videos, aligning with the growing popularity of portrait-oriented, short-form videos. Additionally, the background of the action buttons becomes transparent, and the previous color theming based on album art is removed in this new layout.
As of now, this fullscreen album art redesign is in the testing phase and has not been widely rolled out to all users. The update reflects YouTube Music’s ongoing efforts to enhance user engagement by modernizing its interface and aligning with current visual trends in digital music consumption.
While the fullscreen album art feature is still under development, it signifies a broader trend among music streaming services to offer more visually engaging and immersive experiences. Users can anticipate further refinements to the interface as YouTube Music continues to test and implement user feedback.
