Meta has announced the integration of its AI assistant, Meta AI, into the direct messaging (DM) feature of Threads, its social media platform. This enhancement allows users to engage in private conversations with the AI directly within the app.
Previously, Threads users in select regions could interact with Meta AI through public posts, similar to the functionality offered by X’s Grok. The new update extends this capability to private DMs, enabling users to share posts, images, links, and videos with Meta AI, and to ask follow-up questions for deeper engagement on various topics.
By embedding Meta AI into Threads’ DMs, Meta aims to keep users within its ecosystem, potentially reducing reliance on third-party AI assistants like OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini. This move aligns with Meta’s broader strategy of integrating AI across its platforms, as Meta AI is already available in DMs on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
The global rollout of this feature commenced on Monday, with Meta indicating plans to continue testing Meta AI in public feeds across various markets. User feedback will inform future expansions. For those preferring fewer AI interactions, options are available to mute @meta.ai, mark Meta AI posts as “Not interested,” or hide AI-generated replies on their posts.
