Apple TV Outperforms Android in Digital Signage Reliability

In the realm of digital signage, the choice of hardware significantly impacts system reliability and maintenance costs. A recent study by Kitcast, detailed in their ‘State of Digital Signage 2026’ report, provides compelling data comparing the performance of Apple TV and Android devices in such deployments.

Analyzing telemetry from 1,000 Apple TV units and 250 Android devices over a 12-month period, the report reveals that Apple TV devices achieve a median uptime of 99.31%, with 70% maintaining uptime above 99%. In contrast, Android devices exhibit a median uptime of 96.63%, with only 12% surpassing the 99% uptime threshold. Notably, nearly a third of Android devices fall below 95% uptime.

The frequency of offline events further underscores this disparity. On average, Android devices experience 15.2 offline incidents per year, whereas Apple TV units encounter only 5.3 such events annually. This translates to a higher maintenance burden for Android-based systems.

Hardware longevity also favors Apple TV. The annual replacement rate for Android devices stands at approximately 18%, significantly higher than the 2% observed for Apple TV units. This suggests that while Android devices may offer lower initial costs, they incur higher long-term expenses due to increased maintenance and replacement needs.

These findings highlight the importance of considering total cost of ownership and system reliability when selecting hardware for digital signage. Investing in more reliable hardware like Apple TV can lead to reduced downtime and lower maintenance costs over time.
