Samsung’s latest foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 8, introduces a wider form factor, aiming to enhance the user experience. However, when it comes to video playback, the anticipated improvements are minimal.
Historically, the Galaxy Z Fold series has excelled in tasks like reading, web browsing, and multitasking. Yet, video consumption has been a challenge due to the display’s aspect ratio. Previous models, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 7, offered a viewing area for videos comparable to that of the Galaxy S26 Ultra, despite the larger screen size.
With the Galaxy Z Fold 8’s 4:3 aspect ratio, expectations were high for a more immersive video experience. Unfortunately, the actual usable screen space for videos remains nearly identical to its predecessors. For instance, content like movie trailers, typically in a 21:9 format, still display with black bars, and standard YouTube videos don’t fully utilize the expanded screen real estate. Additionally, enabling captions can feel more cramped due to the screen’s dimensions.
While the new design does reduce the prominence of black bars during video playback, the overall improvement is marginal. The experience is akin to watching content on an iPad Mini, where the display is larger, but the actual video size doesn’t significantly increase.
In summary, the Galaxy Z Fold 8’s design changes offer aesthetic and functional benefits in various applications. However, for users prioritizing video consumption, the enhancements are subtle. As foldable technology continues to evolve, it’s crucial for manufacturers to address these specific user needs to deliver a truly comprehensive multimedia experience.
