The proliferation of AI-generated books on platforms like Apple Books and Amazon is increasingly undermining the work of genuine authors. Journalist Joanna Stern recently discovered over ten counterfeit versions of her book, ‘I Am Not a Robot: My Year Using AI to Do (Almost) Everything,’ on Apple Books shortly after its release. These imitations featured similar covers and were priced comparably to the original, aiming to deceive readers. Despite reporting and removing these fakes, new ones quickly emerged, highlighting the persistent nature of the issue.
Similarly, New York Times journalist Kashmir Hill found a fabricated biography of herself on Amazon, authored by a fictitious individual using a stock photo. This biography was among ten others published by the same fake author within a single week, indicating a systematic exploitation of AI to produce counterfeit content rapidly. The ease of creating such content is facilitated by AI tools like ChatGPT, which can generate entire books in mere hours.
The problem extends beyond e-books. Amazon’s print-on-demand service allows these AI-generated works to be offered as physical copies, further complicating the issue. This trend not only deceives consumers but also dilutes the market for legitimate authors, making it challenging for readers to discern authentic works from AI-generated imitations.
The rise of AI-generated content on major platforms underscores the need for more robust content moderation and verification processes. As AI technology becomes more sophisticated, distinguishing between genuine and counterfeit works will become increasingly difficult. Consumers are advised to scrutinize reviews and sample pages before making purchases to ensure the authenticity of the content.
