Spotify Introduces Parent-Managed Accounts for Free Users

Spotify has expanded its ‘Managed Accounts’ feature to users on its free tier, allowing parents in the U.S., U.K., Australia, France, Germany, and the Netherlands to create and oversee accounts for their children. This functionality, previously exclusive to paid subscribers, enables parents to control their children’s listening experiences on the platform.

Introduced in 2024, Managed Accounts provide a separate music environment for children under 13. This separation ensures that children’s listening habits do not influence their parents’ personalized recommendations or appear in features like Spotify Wrapped. Children can curate their own playlists, mark favorite tracks, and receive tailored music suggestions.

Parents have the ability to restrict access to specific artists and songs. By default, content labeled as explicit is inaccessible, and video playback is disabled. Additionally, interactive features such as messaging are limited, ensuring a safer and more controlled environment for young listeners.

To set up a Managed Account, parents should navigate to their account settings in the Spotify app, select ‘Add a Member,’ and choose the option for adding a listener under 13. The setup process includes selecting a display name and configuring content preferences, which can be adjusted at any time.

This expansion aligns with broader industry efforts to provide parents with greater control over their children’s online experiences, addressing growing concerns about digital safety and content appropriateness. By extending Managed Accounts to free users, Spotify is making these parental controls more accessible, reflecting a commitment to user safety and content management.
