Android Backup Data Now Counts Toward Google Account Storage

Google has updated its Android backup policy, expanding the types of data that count toward a user’s Google Account storage quota. Previously, only images and videos uploaded to Google Photos and multimedia message service (MMS) data were included in the storage calculation. Effective July 7, this policy now encompasses additional data types such as SMS messages, call history, and device settings.

On average, this change is expected to increase the size of backups by approximately 40 megabytes. To provide users with greater control over their backups, Google is introducing new settings that allow individuals to manage which data types are included. Users will have the option to enable or disable backups for SMS and MMS messages, call history, and device settings through on/off toggles. These new preferences are being rolled out over the coming weeks.

To access these settings on Pixel devices, navigate to Settings > Accounts and backup > Google Backup > Other device data. Alternatively, users can search for “backup” within the Settings app to locate the relevant options.

This policy update is being implemented starting July 7 for new Android backup users and will be extended to existing accounts in the coming months.

By including a broader range of data in backups, Google aims to offer a more comprehensive backup solution, ensuring that users can restore a wider array of information when setting up new devices or recovering data. The introduction of user-controlled settings reflects Google’s commitment to providing transparency and customization in data management.
