iOS 27 Beta Unveils Clues to Potential ‘AirPods Ultra’

Recent findings in the second developer beta of iOS 27 suggest that Apple is developing a new wearable device, potentially named ‘AirPods Ultra.’ App designer and developer Sam Henri Gold discovered code referencing a product codenamed B790, which is described as capable of transmitting ‘two images from cameras on either side of user’s head.’

While initial speculation points towards Apple’s rumored smart glasses, another plausible interpretation is that this code pertains to AirPods equipped with cameras. Notably, the AirPods Pro 3 carried the codename B788, indicating a possible progression in the AirPods lineup.

Apple is reportedly working on both ‘AirPods Ultra’ and smart glasses featuring cameras. A key feature anticipated in these devices is Visual Intelligence, which would enable users to identify objects in their environment. For instance, by looking at a houseplant, Siri could provide detailed information about it.

Visual Intelligence is already available on the iPhone 15 Pro and newer models. In iOS 27, this feature can be accessed through the Camera app via a new ‘Siri’ mode.

The code in question appears to guide Visual Intelligence on its functionality for the new device, indicating compatibility with landmarks, text, and recognizable objects. Examples cited include the Eiffel Tower and a coffee mug.

Although the code does not divulge further details, it adds to the growing evidence that Apple is actively developing camera-equipped wearables. According to recent reports, both the ‘AirPods Ultra’ and smart glasses are slated for a late 2027 release.

These developments underscore Apple’s commitment to integrating advanced technologies into their wearable products. The incorporation of Visual Intelligence into devices like ‘AirPods Ultra’ could significantly enhance user interaction with the environment, offering real-time information and a more immersive experience. As the anticipated 2027 launch approaches, it will be intriguing to see how Apple positions these innovations within its broader ecosystem.
