Apple is charting a course for its Mac Studio lineup with significant updates on the horizon. According to recent insights, the company is preparing to release an M5 Ultra version later this year, followed by a more substantial M7 Ultra model anticipated in 2028.
In a strategic shift, Apple intends to bypass the higher-end M6 chips entirely. This decision results in a two-year interval between the M5 Ultra and M7 Ultra models. The forthcoming M7 series is expected to emphasize on-device artificial intelligence capabilities and GPU-intensive tasks, aligning with the growing demand for AI and advanced graphics processing.
Historically, Apple’s silicon lineup has included base M-series chips, along with Pro and Max variants. The M6 generation marks a departure from this pattern, as it will not feature Pro or Max versions. Consequently, the Mac Studio will transition directly from the M5 Ultra to the M7 Ultra, omitting an M6 Ultra iteration.
While the M5 Ultra model slated for release this year is not anticipated to undergo a major redesign, Apple is reportedly developing new internal architecture for the 2028 Mac Studio. This includes an improved heat sink aimed at enhancing thermal performance, which is crucial for maintaining optimal operation during intensive workloads.
The Mac Studio refresh was initially planned for earlier in 2026 but faced delays due to memory chip supply issues and rising costs. Apple has tested configurations supporting up to 768GB of unified memory; however, supply constraints may limit the availability of such high-capacity options at launch.
As of now, it remains uncertain whether Apple will meet an October release timeline for the M5 Ultra model, especially considering that current M3 Ultra Mac Studio units have delivery estimates extending into October.
Apple’s decision to skip the M6 Pro and M6 Max chips and focus on the M7 series underscores its commitment to advancing AI and GPU performance in its hardware.
