Samsara’s New Tracking Label Aims to Combat Cargo Theft

In response to the escalating issue of cargo theft, Samsara has introduced an innovative solution: the Samsara Tracking Label. This compact, adhesive label, approximately the size of a business card, is designed to provide real-time location tracking for shipments, addressing a significant vulnerability in the logistics industry.

Traditional cargo tracking methods often leave shipments unmonitored between major checkpoints, creating opportunities for theft. Samsara’s new label integrates a small zinc battery and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology, enabling continuous tracking throughout the shipping process. This advancement offers a more comprehensive monitoring system compared to previous solutions.

David Gal, Samsara’s Vice President of Connected Equipment, highlighted the evolution of their tracking devices. Initially, the company developed the ‘Asset Tag,’ a wine cork-sized device that provided real-time visibility but was limited by its size and cost, making it suitable only for high-value cargo. Additionally, the need to retrieve these devices post-shipment reduced their practicality for one-way logistics.

The development of the Samsara Tracking Label was driven by customer feedback seeking a smaller, more cost-effective solution. The label’s design allows it to be affixed discreetly to various types of cargo without protruding, making it suitable for a wide range of shipments. Its affordability and disposability address the challenges associated with previous tracking devices.

A key advantage of the Tracking Label is its integration with Samsara’s extensive network of devices. Over the years, Samsara has equipped numerous customer fleets with cameras and sensors, creating a robust infrastructure that the Tracking Label leverages. This network acts as a Bluetooth mesh, enabling precise, real-time location tracking of shipments without the need for additional hardware.

Upon delivery to customers, the Tracking Labels are in a low-power sleep mode, extending their shelf life up to nine months. This feature ensures that the labels are ready for activation when needed, providing flexibility and reliability for various shipping schedules.

The introduction of the Samsara Tracking Label comes at a critical time for the shipping and logistics industries, which have been grappling with increasing instances of cargo theft. By offering an affordable, disposable, and efficient tracking solution, Samsara aims to enhance supply chain security and provide businesses with greater confidence in the safety and timely delivery of their goods.

As cargo theft continues to pose significant challenges, the adoption of advanced tracking technologies like Samsara’s Tracking Label could play a pivotal role in mitigating losses and improving overall supply chain resilience. Businesses should consider integrating such solutions to safeguard their shipments and maintain operational efficiency in an increasingly complex logistics landscape.
