Nothing’s budget-friendly CMF Phone series, known for delivering impressive value, is facing an indefinite pause due to escalating component costs, particularly RAM. The company has confirmed that no new CMF Phone model will be released this year.
Akis Evangelidis, co-founder of Nothing and the driving force behind the CMF Phone series, announced the cancellation of the anticipated successor. He cited the current surge in memory prices as a significant barrier to producing a device that offers meaningful improvements at a price point consistent with the CMF brand’s ethos.
Evangelidis further elaborated that replicating the specifications of the CMF Phone 2 Pro in today’s market would result in a production cost approximately 50% higher than before. This substantial increase has rendered the continuation of the CMF Phone line unfeasible for the time being.
Adding to the discussion, Nothing’s CEO, Carl Pei, highlighted that memory components have now become the most expensive part of smartphone manufacturing. In some cases, RAM costs surpass those of processors and displays, accounting for over half of the total hardware expenses.
The CMF Phone series has been celebrated for offering high-quality smartphones at accessible prices. However, the current economic landscape, marked by soaring RAM prices, poses a significant challenge to maintaining this balance. As the industry grapples with these cost increases, consumers may need to adjust their expectations regarding the affordability of budget smartphones.
