Americans Skeptical About AI’s Societal Impact, Pew Study Finds

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly integrated into daily life, yet a recent Pew Research study reveals that only 16% of Americans believe AI will positively impact society over the next two decades. In contrast, approximately 40% anticipate a negative effect, highlighting widespread skepticism about the technology’s future role.

Concerns extend to regulatory oversight, with 67% of respondents doubting the U.S. government’s ability to effectively regulate AI. Similarly, 59% lack confidence in companies developing AI responsibly. This apprehension is particularly pronounced among younger individuals under 30, where only 14% foresee a positive societal impact from AI.

Despite these reservations, AI usage is on the rise. About 25% of Americans report daily interactions with AI chatbots, primarily for research or work-related tasks. OpenAI’s ChatGPT leads in popularity, with 44% of U.S. adults using it—a figure that has more than doubled since 2023. Other chatbots like Gemini (24%), Copilot (17%), and MetaAI (14%) also have notable user bases.

Gender differences are evident in AI adoption. Men are more likely to use AI chatbots daily (27% vs. 20% for women) and show greater enthusiasm for the technology. While both genders use ChatGPT equally, men more frequently engage with other AI platforms such as Copilot and Grok.

AI is also reshaping information consumption habits. Sixty percent of survey participants regularly read AI-generated internet summaries, and a smaller segment utilizes AI for fitness and dieting information. However, nearly half of Americans, particularly those aged 65 and older, report not using AI in their daily lives. Among seniors, nearly 75% have never interacted with AI chatbots.

These findings underscore a complex relationship between Americans and AI: growing usage and integration into daily activities coexist with significant skepticism and concern about its broader societal implications. As AI continues to evolve, addressing public apprehensions through transparent development and effective regulation will be crucial in shaping its future role in society.
