WhatsApp is enhancing its web client by introducing group voice and video calling capabilities, allowing users to connect with up to 32 participants directly from their browsers. This development brings the web version closer to the functionality offered by its mobile and desktop counterparts.
To initiate a group call on WhatsApp Web, users can open a group chat and click the call button at the top of the conversation. This feature enables users to choose between voice and video calls and select specific participants from the group, rather than including all members by default. This flexibility ensures that users can tailor their communication to their needs.
In addition to supporting up to 32 participants, the new feature includes screen sharing during video calls, facilitating collaboration and presentations directly through the browser. All calls are end-to-end encrypted, maintaining the platform’s commitment to user privacy and security.
Previously, WhatsApp Web was limited to text messaging and file sharing, with voice and video calls available only on mobile devices or through the desktop application. The introduction of group calling on the web client addresses a significant limitation, especially benefiting users who prefer or are restricted to using WhatsApp through a browser.
Currently, this feature is being tested with a select group of beta users, with plans for a broader rollout in the near future. Users interested in accessing this functionality can join the WhatsApp Web beta program by navigating to Settings > Help and enabling the ‘Join the beta’ option. However, participation in the beta does not guarantee immediate access to all new features, as WhatsApp typically implements updates gradually.
The addition of group voice and video calls to WhatsApp Web signifies a substantial enhancement in the platform’s versatility, catering to the evolving needs of its diverse user base. As remote work and virtual gatherings continue to be prevalent, this update positions WhatsApp as a more comprehensive communication tool, offering seamless connectivity across various devices without the necessity of additional installations.
