Facebook and Instagram Experience Global Outage

On Friday, June 12, 2026, users worldwide encountered significant disruptions accessing Facebook and Instagram. Reports of issues began surfacing around 9:30 a.m. ET, with Downdetector recording over 100,000 problem reports for Facebook by 10 a.m. ET. The outage affected users across multiple countries, including the United States, Canada, the Philippines, and Ireland.

Users reported a range of issues, such as being unexpectedly logged out, failed login attempts, inability to refresh feeds, and persistent error messages on both mobile apps and desktop websites. Instagram users specifically noted dysfunctional comment sections, where comments would disappear upon interaction. Both Android and iOS applications, as well as web versions, were impacted simultaneously, indicating a backend infrastructure-level failure rather than a client-side issue.

Meta, the parent company of both platforms, acknowledged the disruption. Andy Stone, Meta’s Communications Director, stated, “We’re aware people are currently having trouble accessing our services. We’re working on it.” Additionally, Meta’s status page listed “High disruptions” for Facebook Ads Manager, affecting advertisers’ ability to create or edit ads.

The outage had broader implications beyond individual users. Businesses and advertisers relying on Meta’s platforms for campaigns, customer engagement, and real-time communication faced operational setbacks. Content creators and digital marketers dependent on Facebook and Instagram for audience reach were also affected.

This incident is not isolated. Meta has experienced several significant outages in recent years. Notably, in October 2021, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp went offline for nearly six hours due to a faulty BGP configuration change. Subsequent outages in March 2024 and December 2024 each impacted hundreds of thousands of users globally, with recovery times ranging from one to several hours.

As of the time of reporting, Meta has not provided a detailed technical explanation for the cause of the current disruption. Users are advised to monitor Meta’s official status page and social channels for real-time updates.

Given the increasing reliance on digital platforms for communication, business, and social interaction, such outages underscore the need for robust infrastructure and transparent communication from service providers. Users and businesses should consider diversifying their digital presence to mitigate the impact of future disruptions.
