Apple to Introduce Native Support for Google Cast and Other Streaming Protocols in iOS 27
In a significant move to enhance device interoperability, Apple is reportedly developing native support for third-party streaming protocols, including Google Cast, in its upcoming iOS 27 update. This initiative is largely driven by the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which mandates greater openness and compatibility among digital platforms.
Traditionally, Apple’s AirPlay has been the default protocol for streaming content from iOS devices to compatible speakers and televisions. However, with the anticipated changes in iOS 27, users may have the option to set alternative streaming protocols, such as Google Cast, as their default. This development was highlighted by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who noted that Apple is working to integrate support for third-party AirPlay alternatives at a system level.
Google Cast, formerly known as Chromecast, is among the most widely used third-party streaming protocols. Its integration into iOS would enable users to seamlessly stream audio, video, and photos from their Apple devices to a broader range of smart speakers and TVs without relying solely on AirPlay or Bluetooth connections.
