Waymo Halts Freeway Robotaxi Services Over Construction Zone Challenges in Major Cities

Waymo Temporarily Suspends Freeway Robotaxi Services Amid Construction Zone Challenges

Waymo, the autonomous vehicle subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., has announced a temporary suspension of its robotaxi services on freeways in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Miami. This decision comes as the company works to enhance its vehicles’ performance in navigating construction zones, a challenge that has recently come to the forefront.

Addressing Construction Zone Navigation

The suspension follows incidents where Waymo’s autonomous vehicles encountered difficulties in construction areas. Notably, on May 19, a user on X (formerly Twitter) shared a video alleging that a Waymo robotaxi blasted through cones and was subsequently chased by police. Such occurrences have prompted the company to reassess and refine its software to better handle these complex scenarios.

A Waymo spokesperson stated, We are integrating recent technical learnings into our software and expect to resume these routes soon. In the interim, Waymo’s robotaxis will continue to operate on surface streets within the affected cities.

Previous Service Interruptions Due to Environmental Challenges

This move is part of a series of service adjustments by Waymo in response to environmental challenges. Earlier this month, the company paused operations in Atlanta and San Antonio due to issues with vehicles navigating flooded roads. A software recall was issued to address this problem, aiming to help the fleet avoid flooded areas. Despite these efforts, incidents of robotaxis becoming stuck in floodwaters led to further suspensions in these cities.

Expansion Plans Amid Operational Challenges

These service interruptions occur as Waymo aggressively pursues expansion into new markets. The company aims to offer up to one million paid rides per week by the end of 2026. Additionally, Waymo is testing its new Zeekr-built robotaxi, named Ojai, with plans to introduce rides in this vehicle in the near future.

The Importance of Freeway Operations

Waymo began offering highway rides in late 2025, recognizing the importance of freeway travel in reducing trip times and connecting riders to key destinations like airports. In the Bay Area, for example, freeway access has significantly shortened trips that previously took 45 minutes to over an hour.

Ongoing Efforts to Enhance Safety and Reliability

The company has not cited a specific incident leading to the current freeway service suspension. However, the challenges faced in construction zones underscore the complexities of autonomous vehicle navigation in dynamic environments. Waymo remains committed to refining its technology to ensure the safety and reliability of its services.
