Instagram to Discontinue Encrypted Direct Messages Starting May 8
Instagram has announced that, effective May 8, 2026, it will cease support for end-to-end encrypted direct messages (DMs). This decision marks a significant change in the platform’s approach to user privacy and data security.
End-to-end encryption ensures that only the communicating parties can access the content of their messages, preventing intermediaries, including service providers like Meta, from reading them. Instagram introduced this feature in 2023 as an optional setting, allowing users to enhance the confidentiality of their conversations.
In March 2026, Meta updated its help page to inform users of the impending removal of this encryption feature. Users with encrypted chats have since received in-app notifications advising them to download their messages and media before the May 8 deadline.
A Meta spokesperson explained the rationale behind this decision, stating that the adoption rate for encrypted messaging on Instagram was low. They emphasized that users seeking encrypted communication can utilize WhatsApp, another Meta-owned platform where end-to-end encryption is enabled by default.
The company has not provided specific details on the fate of existing encrypted conversations post-May 8, leading to concerns among users about the handling of their private data. This move appears to contrast with Meta’s previous efforts to bolster privacy across its platforms.
Currently, Meta offers end-to-end encryption by default on WhatsApp and as an optional feature for group chats on Facebook Messenger. The removal of this feature from Instagram underscores the company’s strategic decisions regarding user privacy and data management.
