Meta Launches Instants: A New App for Sharing Temporary, Unedited Photos and Videos

Instagram has unveiled a new standalone application named Instants, designed to facilitate the sharing of temporary, unedited photos and videos. This initiative by Meta aims to foster spontaneous social interactions by eliminating the pressures associated with curated feeds and polished content.

Instants opens directly to the camera interface, encouraging users to capture and share moments in real-time. Unlike traditional platforms, it restricts the ability to upload existing media from device galleries, ensuring that all shared content is freshly captured. Customization options are minimal, allowing only basic text additions without the use of filters or advanced editing tools. This approach emphasizes authenticity and rawness in user interactions.

Once a photo or video is sent, recipients can view it only once, after which it disappears completely from the platform within 24 hours. This ephemeral nature ensures that shared media remains temporary and cannot be revisited or saved, aligning with the app’s focus on fleeting, genuine exchanges.

Integration with existing Instagram accounts simplifies the user experience. Instants requires users to log in with their Instagram credentials and automatically syncs with their current mutual followers and Close Friends lists. This seamless connection allows users to engage with their established social circles without the need to build a new network. Additionally, content shared through Instants can be accessed within the main Instagram application, providing flexibility in how users interact with temporary messages.

Currently, Instants is available for both Android and iOS devices in select international markets, including Italy and Spain. Meta is actively testing various versions of the app and gathering user feedback to refine the experience before considering a broader global release.

The introduction of Instants reflects Meta’s ongoing efforts to innovate within the social media landscape, offering users new ways to connect and share in an increasingly digital world.
