Google and Intel Forge Deeper Alliance to Advance AI Infrastructure
In a significant move to bolster artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, Google and Intel have announced an expanded multiyear partnership aimed at enhancing AI infrastructure. This collaboration will see Google Cloud integrating Intel’s latest Xeon processors, including the cutting-edge Xeon 6 chips, to optimize AI, cloud computing, and inference operations. This partnership underscores the longstanding relationship between the two tech giants, with Google leveraging Intel’s Xeon processors for decades to power its data centers.
A pivotal aspect of this renewed alliance is the co-development of custom infrastructure processing units (IPUs). These specialized chips are designed to accelerate and manage data center tasks by offloading workloads from central processing units (CPUs), thereby enhancing overall system efficiency. The focus will be on creating custom application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC)-based IPUs, building upon a chip development partnership that commenced in 2021.
This collaboration comes at a time when the tech industry is experiencing an unprecedented demand for CPUs. For instance, SoftBank-owned Arm Holdings recently announced the Arm AGI CPU, marking the company’s first self-produced chip amid a global CPU shortage. This trend highlights a broader industry shift towards enhancing CPU capabilities to meet the growing demands of AI applications.
