Google Restores Song Search to Pixel Lock Screen with ‘Now Playing’ Update

Google Pixel’s ‘Now Playing’ Feature Reintroduces Lock Screen Song Search

Google has reinstated the manual song search functionality on the lock screen for its Pixel devices through the ‘Now Playing’ feature. This update allows users to identify ambient music directly from the lock screen, enhancing the convenience and utility of the feature.

The ‘Now Playing’ feature, introduced with the Pixel 2, has been a standout aspect of Google’s smartphones. It automatically identifies music playing in the background and displays the song title and artist on the lock screen. Over time, Google has refined this feature, incorporating user feedback to improve its accuracy and functionality.

In a recent update, Google removed the manual song search capability from the lock screen, prompting users to utilize alternative methods such as corner shortcuts or Quick Settings tiles to initiate a song search. This change was met with mixed reactions, as many users appreciated the immediacy of identifying songs directly from the lock screen.

Responding to user feedback, Google has now restored the Tap to see what’s playing prompt beneath the fingerprint icon on the lock screen. By tapping this prompt, users can activate the microphone, which will then identify the song playing in the environment. Once identified, the song’s information, including cover art, appears on the lock screen, along with options to favorite the track or open it in the user’s preferred music application.

To access this reinstated feature, users should ensure their devices are updated to version B.23 of Android System Intelligence. The update can be found by navigating to the Settings app, tapping on the user’s name at the top, switching to the ‘All services’ tab, and selecting ‘Privacy & security’ followed by ‘System services’ to update. Additionally, updating the ‘Now Playing’ app via the Google Play Store is recommended to ensure all features function correctly.

This restoration underscores Google’s commitment to enhancing user experience by integrating intuitive and accessible features into its devices. The ‘Now Playing’ feature continues to evolve, reflecting the company’s dedication to innovation and responsiveness to user needs.
