Its functionalities include sorting emails, coordinating with insurance providers, checking in for flights, and organizing schedules. Initially introduced under the names Clawdbot and Moltbot, the project rebranded as OpenClaw and has experienced rapid growth since its launch in November 2025. Notably, it has amassed over 100,000 stars on GitHub and attracted two million visitors to its project page within a single week, marking it as one of the fastest-growing open-source AI projects in recent years.
Peter Steinberger, an Austrian software engineer renowned for developing tools that support open collaboration, emphasized the importance of maintaining OpenClaw as an open-source project. In a blog post regarding his new role, he stated, It’s always been important to me that OpenClaw stays open source and given the freedom to flourish. He further expressed that joining OpenAI provides the optimal environment to advance his vision and broaden the project’s impact.
The rapid expansion of OpenClaw has also raised security considerations. China’s industry ministry has cautioned that open-source AI agents could pose risks if improperly configured, potentially leading to cyberattacks or data breaches. Despite these concerns, OpenClaw has seen swift adoption in China, integrating with local language models like DeepSeek. Additionally, Chinese search engine Baidu plans to incorporate OpenClaw into its primary smartphone application, indicating the project’s growing global reach.
