Google Messages Enhances App with @Mentions, MLS Encryption, and Redesigned Features

Google Messages Unveils Exciting New Features for Enhanced User Experience

Google Messages has recently introduced a suite of new features aimed at enhancing user interaction and security within the app. These updates include the ability to mention individuals in group chats, a redesigned long-press menu, the implementation of Messaging Layer Security (MLS) encryption, and an updated read receipts system.

@Mentions in Group RCS Chats

The new @mentions feature allows users to directly address specific individuals in group conversations by typing @ followed by the person’s name. This functionality ensures that the mentioned individual receives a notification, even if they have muted the group chat. This feature is currently being rolled out gradually and is expected to be widely available soon.

Redesigned Long-Press Menu

Google Messages has revamped the long-press menu for messages and images. Instead of the previous toolbar, a floating menu now appears when a user long-presses on a message or image. The background blurs, and haptic feedback is provided, offering a more immersive and intuitive user experience.

Implementation of MLS Encryption

In a significant move towards enhanced security, Google Messages has adopted the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol. This protocol facilitates end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for cross-platform RCS messaging, including communications between Android and iOS devices. Users can verify if MLS encryption is active by long-pressing a message and selecting the View details option. In the Encryption Protocol section, a value of 1 indicates that MLS encryption is in use.

Updated Read Receipts System

The read receipts feature has undergone a redesign to provide clearer communication statuses. The new system uses distinct icons to represent different message statuses:

– Sending: An ellipsis icon.

– Sent: A single checkmark with a ring.

– Delivered: Double checkmarks with a ring.

– Read: Solid double checkmarks within a circle.

These icons are positioned at the bottom-right corner of message bubbles and images, providing users with immediate visual feedback on their message statuses.

Additional Enhancements

Beyond these major updates, Google Messages has introduced several other improvements:

– Toned Down Nano Banana Remix: The Nano Banana Remix feature has been refined to offer a more subtle and user-friendly experience.

– Camera Tweaks: The in-app camera functionality has been enhanced for better performance and image quality.

– Bigger Gemini FAB: The Floating Action Button (FAB) for the Gemini feature has been enlarged for easier access.

– Link Preview Redesign: Link previews have been redesigned to provide a more informative and visually appealing display.

– Leave Unknown Group Chats: Users now have the option to leave group chats initiated by unknown contacts, enhancing control over group interactions.

– Image Viewer Redesign: The image viewer has been updated for a more immersive and user-friendly experience.

These updates reflect Google’s commitment to continually improving the Messages app, focusing on user experience, security, and functionality. Users are encouraged to update their app to the latest version to take advantage of these new features.
