Google Chrome to End Support for macOS Monterey in July 2026
Google has announced that starting in July 2026, its Chrome browser will no longer support macOS 12, known as Monterey. The final version compatible with Monterey will be Chrome 150, after which users will need to upgrade to macOS 13, Ventura, or later to continue receiving updates.
This change is scheduled to take effect with the release of Chrome 151, tentatively set for July 28, 2026. While Chrome will still function on macOS Monterey, it will cease to receive security patches and new features, potentially exposing users to security vulnerabilities and missing out on the latest browser enhancements.
Apple introduced macOS Monterey in October 2021, bringing features like Universal Control, AirPlay to Mac, and enhancements to FaceTime and Safari. However, as technology progresses, software developers often phase out support for older operating systems to focus on newer versions that offer improved performance and security.
Google’s decision aligns with its previous practices. For instance, in January 2021, Chrome 88 ended support for Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite, requiring users to upgrade to newer macOS versions to continue receiving updates. Similarly, in June 2025, Google announced that Chrome would stop supporting Android 8.0 (Oreo) and Android 9.0 (Pie) starting in August 2025, urging users to upgrade to Android 10.0 or later.
For users still operating on macOS Monterey, it’s advisable to plan for an upgrade to macOS Ventura or a later version before July 2026. This proactive approach will ensure continued access to Chrome’s latest features and security updates, maintaining a safe and efficient browsing experience.
