Amazon Expands Same-Day Perishable Grocery Delivery to 2,300 U.S. Cities

Amazon has significantly broadened its Same-Day Delivery service, now offering fresh groceries to customers in over 2,300 cities and towns across the United States. This expansion, announced on December 10, 2025, marks a substantial increase from the initial launch in August, positioning Amazon as a formidable competitor in the quick-commerce sector alongside Instacart and Walmart+.

Service Expansion and Offerings

Since the introduction of perishable items to its Same-Day Delivery service, Amazon has observed a surge in customer orders for fresh produce, dairy, meat, seafood, baked goods, and frozen foods. These items are frequently purchased alongside electronics, books, pantry staples, snacks, and household essentials such as paper towels and toothpaste.

Ensuring Quality and Freshness

To maintain the integrity of perishable goods during transit, Amazon employs a specialized temperature-controlled fulfillment network. Each order undergoes a comprehensive six-point quality check upon arrival at the fulfillment center and before dispatch. Additionally, temperature-sensitive products are delivered in insulated bags to preserve freshness.

Customer Preferences and Sales Growth

Fresh groceries have become increasingly popular among Amazon’s Same-Day Delivery customers, now accounting for nine of the top ten most-ordered items. The leading products include bananas, Haas avocados, strawberries, honeycrisp apples, limes, blueberries, blackberries, organic bananas, navel oranges, and bathroom tissues.

The company reports a 30-fold increase in perishable grocery sales since January. Notably, customers who incorporate fresh groceries into their Same-Day Delivery orders tend to shop approximately twice as often as those who do not.

Delivery Fees and Membership Benefits

For Amazon Prime members, same-day delivery is complimentary on orders exceeding $25. Orders below this threshold incur a $2.99 delivery fee. Non-Prime customers can access the service for a $12.99 fee, regardless of order size.

Expansion of Product Selection

Since August, Amazon has expanded its perishable selection for Same-Day Delivery by over 30%, incorporating thousands of popular items from Whole Foods Market. This enhancement offers customers a more extensive array of fresh and organic products, further solidifying Amazon’s presence in the grocery delivery market.

Future Plans

Looking ahead, Amazon plans to extend its Same-Day Delivery service to additional cities in 2026, aiming to provide more customers with convenient access to fresh groceries and household essentials.
