Apple is preparing to comply with Texas’s new age assurance law, SB 2420, which mandates app stores and developers to verify users’ ages. While Apple has previously introduced age verification tools, the company expresses concerns that the law may compromise user privacy by necessitating the collection of sensitive personal information for all app downloads, regardless of content.
The law, effective January 1, 2026, requires Apple to confirm if Texas users are 18 or older. Minors must join a Family Sharing group managed by a parent or guardian, who must approve all App Store downloads and purchases. Apple plans to assist developers in determining user age through its Declared Age Range API, which will be updated to align with the new requirements.
Apple also plans to introduce APIs allowing developers to obtain parental consent for significant app changes affecting age ratings. Parents will have the option to revoke consent if they find an app inappropriate for their child.
Apple advises developers to prepare for similar laws in Utah and Louisiana, emphasizing the need for proactive compliance measures.
