Microsoft Resolves Windows 11 24H2 Audio Issues Affecting Bluetooth Devices

Microsoft has addressed a significant audio issue in Windows 11 version 24H2 that previously rendered Bluetooth headsets and speakers inoperative on certain devices. This problem, first identified in December 2024, has been resolved through a recent driver update, leading to the removal of the temporary block that had prevented affected users from upgrading to the latest operating system version.

Background of the Issue

The audio malfunction originated from a software incompatibility affecting specific devices equipped with Dirac Audio technology. Users reported a complete loss of audio output after installing the Windows 11 24H2 update, impacting integrated speakers, Bluetooth speakers, and wireless headsets. Applications failed to recognize the audio hardware, rendering sound-dependent functionalities unusable.

Root Cause Analysis

Microsoft’s investigation pinpointed the conflict to the `cridspapo.dll` file, a component of the Dirac Audio processing suite designed to enhance sound clarity and precision. The incompatibility between this file and the Windows 11 24H2 update led to the widespread audio failures.

Preventive Measures

To mitigate the issue, Microsoft implemented a compatibility safeguard hold on December 18, 2024. This measure automatically blocked devices containing the problematic `cridspapo.dll` file from receiving the Windows 11 24H2 update via the standard Windows Update channel. Affected users received notifications indicating that the upgrade was temporarily paused, with references to safeguard hold ID: 54283088. This proactive approach aimed to contain the problem while a permanent solution was developed.

Resolution and Update Release

As of September 12, 2025, the audio issue has been officially resolved. Microsoft released a new version of the audio driver through Windows Update, addressing the incompatibility. Consequently, the safeguard hold was lifted on September 11, 2025. Users with previously affected devices can now install Windows 11 version 24H2 without encountering audio issues, provided no other compatibility holds are in place.

User Guidance

Microsoft advises that it may take up to 48 hours for the update to become available to all eligible devices. A system restart may expedite the process. Users are encouraged to install the latest security updates to benefit from this and other important fixes.
