Zipline Secures Additional $200 Million to Propel Drone Delivery Expansion
Zipline, a leading U.S.-based autonomous drone delivery and logistics company, has successfully raised an additional $200 million, augmenting its recent funding round to a total of $800 million. This latest infusion of capital, which includes participation from crypto investment firm Paradigm, follows an initial tranche that valued the company at $7.6 billion.
Founded in 2014, Zipline has developed a comprehensive drone delivery ecosystem encompassing the aircraft, launch and landing systems, and logistics software. The company commenced its operations in Africa, notably delivering blood supplies in Rwanda. Over the years, Zipline has expanded its services to include the delivery of food, retail items, agricultural products, and healthcare supplies across five African countries, several U.S. cities, and Japan.
The newly acquired funds are earmarked to accelerate Zipline’s expansion into at least four U.S. states within the year. The company has already announced plans to establish operations in Houston, Phoenix, and Seattle.
In a recent video message, Zipline’s founder and CEO, Keller Cliffton, highlighted the company’s significant growth in its U.S. home delivery service, which was launched last year. Cliffton noted that delivery volumes in January and February surpassed initial forecasts, attributing this growth to customers utilizing the service multiple times daily and placing larger orders.
In the last three weeks, we’ve observed a more than 20% increase in the average order size, with customers frequently ordering from Zipline, Cliffton stated. In response to this surge in demand, the company plans to double the number of brands available on its app over the next 30 days.
Zipline’s home delivery service employs its Platform 2 drones, designed to carry payloads of up to eight pounds and operate within a 10-mile radius. For longer-range deliveries, the company utilizes its larger Platform 1 drones, capable of covering round trips of up to 120 miles. The Platform 2 service was initially launched in Pea Ridge, Arkansas, and the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex in partnership with Walmart, and has since expanded to include over a dozen restaurant brands.
The company’s rapid growth and substantial funding underscore the increasing viability and demand for autonomous drone delivery services. As Zipline continues to expand its operations and enhance its technology, it is poised to play a pivotal role in transforming the logistics and delivery landscape.
