WhatsApp is introducing a new feature that allows group members to share recent chat history with new participants, enhancing the onboarding experience for newcomers.
This feature, currently available to a select group of beta testers via TestFlight, enables existing group members to share up to 100 recent messages from the past 14 days with new members. This functionality ensures that newcomers can quickly catch up on recent discussions and access important information shared within the group.
To utilize this feature, when adding a new member to a group, users will see an option to share recent messages. They can choose to share up to 100 messages, allowing the new member to quickly catch up on recent conversations. However, WhatsApp also allows users to select a smaller number of messages if they prefer to limit what is shared.
To maintain transparency, WhatsApp notifies all group members when recent messages are shared with a new participant. A message is added to the group chat indicating the name of the user who shared the messages with the new member. The sharing process uses the messages and encryption key on the device of the user who added the new member. Recent messages are protected by end-to-end encryption and are securely delivered to the new member.
This feature is currently in beta testing, and while there is no official timeline for a wider rollout, it is expected to be available to all users in the near future.
In addition to this feature, WhatsApp has been actively enhancing its platform with various updates. For instance, in April 2024, WhatsApp introduced chat filters that allow users to separate unread messages and group chats, making it easier to manage conversations. In July 2024, the platform added the ability to pin multiple messages within a chat, enabling users to highlight important information for easy access. Furthermore, in April 2025, WhatsApp began working on an advanced privacy feature for chats, providing users with more control over their conversations.
These continuous updates demonstrate WhatsApp’s commitment to improving user experience and providing features that cater to the evolving needs of its global user base.
As WhatsApp continues to evolve, users can look forward to more features that enhance communication and privacy within the platform.
