University of Texas to Launch Digital Student IDs on Apple Wallet in 2027

University of Texas to Introduce Digital Student IDs via Apple Wallet in 2027

The University of Texas at Austin has announced plans to implement digital student identification cards compatible with Apple Wallet, starting in the 2027-2028 academic year. This initiative aims to modernize campus access and provide students with a more convenient method to utilize their university credentials.

According to the university’s official statement, students will be able to use their digital IDs for a variety of daily activities, including:

– Gaining entry to campus buildings
– Making payments at dining facilities and retail outlets
– Attending university events
– Accessing library services

Students will receive their digital IDs through the MyUT portal, with the option to add them to Apple Wallet or Android Wallet, ensuring broad accessibility across different devices.

The move towards digital IDs comes in response to persistent student demand for a more streamlined and secure identification system. Student Government leaders Thomas and Chu expressed their satisfaction with the development, stating, For years, students called for digital IDs, and together, we delivered. We are honored to have had Student Government partner with our incredible University administrators to make this long-standing student vision a shared reality.

The university has emphasized the security advantages of digital IDs over traditional physical cards. Digital credentials are linked to personal devices and can be updated in near real-time, reducing the risk associated with lost or stolen cards. Additionally, the transition to digital IDs is expected to result in cost savings for both students and the university by eliminating the need for physical card replacements and reducing production expenses.

The Enterprise Technology team at the University of Texas is currently in the planning and feedback stage of the project. During the transition period, physical IDs will remain available alongside digital versions to ensure a smooth adaptation process.

With a student body exceeding 55,000, the University of Texas at Austin’s adoption of digital student IDs represents one of the largest implementations of Apple Wallet student ID support to date.
