Truecaller Achieves 500 Million Monthly Users Amidst Expanding Services and Market Challenges
Truecaller, the Sweden-based caller identification application, has reached a significant milestone by amassing 500 million monthly active users globally. This achievement underscores the app’s growing importance in combating spam and fraudulent communications.
India remains Truecaller’s largest market, contributing over 350 million users to the total count. Notably, the platform has also expanded its reach, surpassing 150 million users outside of India. This growth reflects a substantial increase of 50 million users in 2025 alone, effectively doubling its user base over the past five years. Additionally, more than 4 million individuals have subscribed to Truecaller’s premium services, indicating a strong demand for enhanced features.
CEO Rishit Jhunjhunwala emphasized the escalating need for tools to navigate unwanted communications, stating, Reaching 500 million users shows the scale of that need, and the trust people place in Truecaller to help make communication safer. In recent years, Truecaller has diversified its offerings beyond caller identification. A notable addition is the Family Protection feature, which allows a designated administrator to manage scam-blocking settings for up to five family members. This includes receiving alerts about potential fraud calls and remotely ending such calls on behalf of less tech-savvy members. Initially piloted in countries like Sweden, Chile, Malaysia, and Kenya, the feature has been rolled out globally, including in India.
The company is also exploring artificial intelligence to enhance user safety. One initiative involves using AI to monitor calls for specific keywords associated with scams, such as digital arrest, a tactic where scammers impersonate law enforcement to extract information or money. Upon detecting such terms, the system can automatically disconnect the call, providing an additional layer of protection.
Despite these advancements, Truecaller faces challenges, particularly in India. The country’s Department of Telecommunications is promoting the Caller Name Presentation (CNAP) system, which displays the caller’s name as registered with telecom providers. This initiative could potentially rival Truecaller’s services. However, the company argues that merely displaying a caller’s name is insufficient to combat spam and fraud. Truecaller offers a more comprehensive solution by providing community-based reports and advanced spam detection features.
Financially, Truecaller has experienced fluctuations. In Q4 2025, the company reported a 49% year-on-year decrease in EBITDA, with advertising revenue declining by 31%. These figures have impacted the company’s stock performance, which has seen a significant decline over the past year. Despite these setbacks, Truecaller remains focused on delivering superior products and services to its users.
The company’s leadership has also seen changes. In November 2024, co-founders Alan Mamedi and Nami Zarringhalam stepped back from daily operations, appointing Rishit Jhunjhunwala as CEO. This transition marks a new chapter for Truecaller as it continues to innovate and expand its services.
