TikTok Unveils ‘Nearby Feed’ to Connect Users with Local Content in Europe

TikTok has introduced a new feature called the Nearby Feed, designed to help users discover local content and events in their vicinity. This feature is currently being rolled out in the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Germany.

The Nearby Feed aims to enhance user experience by showcasing content related to local restaurants, events, and attractions. By integrating location-based recommendations, TikTok enables users to explore their surroundings more effectively. This initiative builds upon earlier tests conducted in Southeast Asia in 2022.

Content displayed in the Nearby Feed is curated based on the user’s location, the nature of the content, and its posting time. This approach ensures that users receive timely and relevant information about local happenings. For content creators, this means that their public posts may reach audiences within the same city or region, especially when they tag specific locations or services.

TikTok emphasizes that sharing location data is optional and restricted to users aged 18 and above. When enabled, the app may utilize the device’s GPS data to provide more accurate, location-based recommendations. iOS users will receive a visible indicator when their location is being accessed, ensuring transparency. The company assures that it collects and uses location information in compliance with local laws.

Certain content will not appear in the Nearby Feed. This includes posts from users under 18, private accounts, or content set to Friends or Only You. Users have the flexibility to change their displayed location, which can be particularly useful when traveling or planning trips.

The introduction of the Nearby Feed also aims to support local economies by increasing visibility for small businesses and cultural institutions. TikTok notes that 46% of its users in the UK have visited a local shop, restaurant, or attraction they discovered on the platform.

Users can access the Nearby Feed directly from the TikTok home screen. Instead of being labeled Nearby, the tab will reflect the user’s current location, providing a seamless browsing experience. As of now, TikTok has not announced plans to expand this feature to additional regions.
